This is the state’s largest gathering for people of faith concerned about climate change—a time for interfaith worship, workshops, resource gathering, and networking with others who are responding to climate change as a moral issue. Power for Pennsylvania: Climate Change and Faith-Based Action
Unitarian Church of Harrisburg 1280 Clover Lane, Harrisburg, PA 17113 2 – 6 p.m.
Keynote speakers:
Dr. Richard B. Alley: “Power for Pennsylvania: Progress on Energy and Climate”
Dr. Alley, Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences at the Pennsylvania State University, has traveled from Antarctica to Greenland to help learn the history of Earth’s climate, and whether the great ice sheets will fall in the ocean and flood our coasts. With over 200 scientific publications, he has been asked to provide advice to the highest levels of government, and been recognized with numerous awards including election to the US National Academy of Sciences, and the Heinz Award. He also has been compared to a cross between Woody Allen and Carl Sagan for his enthusiastic efforts to communicate the excitement and importance of the science to everyone, and is the host of the recent PBS series Earth: the operators’ manual.
Rev. Fletcher Harper: “Green our Faiths: Educating and Mobilizing our Communities to Protect the Earth”
Rev. Harper is Executive Director of GreenFaith, a national interfaith organization that inspires, educates and mobilizes people of diverse religious backgrounds for environmental leadership. Under his leadership, GreenFaith has developed innovative programs linking religious belief and practice to the environment. An award-winning spiritual writer and nationally-recognized preacher on the environment, he teaches and speaks at houses of worship nationwide about the moral, spiritual basis for environmental stewardship and justice. A graduate of Princeton University and Union Theological Seminary, he has served as a parish priest for ten years and in leadership positions in the Episcopal Church.
